Ubuntu and Panasonic Toughbooks

Ubuntu on ToughBooks and other Laptops

Since you got to this page, we’ll assume you already know a little about this Linux based operating system so we won’t spend a lot of time talking about Ubuntu Linux per-se.  What we will say about this operating system for now is that its popularity among Linux Distros remains fairly high. The Ubuntu community continues to be large and Ubuntu Linux contains all the applications you’ll ever need, from word processing and email applications, to web server software and programming tools.

Although we do not load Ubuntu on our ToughBooks, Dell, IBM, HP or other laptops or desktops, it is one of the better operating systems with many of the same features of the Microsoft Suit. Best of all, you can download it and use it and access support groups and get updates for free! (Upon request at ordering time, Bob Johnson’s can download Ubuntu for you prior to shipment). There is a large Ubuntu community adding to this free Linux Distro all the time so the advantages of an open platform live on here. With that said, what we will talk about briefly and in general is using Ubuntu on Panasonic ToughBooks, standard business and non-commercial laptops and desktops.

From what we have read, the majority of ToughBook users installing Ubuntu are private or non-commercial users. That does not mean municipalities, police and other professional/commercial users aren’t. It just means that the majority of users so far appear to be private or non-commercial. Where we have seen Ubuntu used primarily on ToughBooks is on the following Panasonic Ruggedized models: CF-18, CF-28, CF-27, CF72, CF-19 and CF-30. Where we have seen Ubuntu used on Panasonic Business Rugged models are the W8, T8, and F8. Our suspicion here is that well while Ubuntu is widely accepted, it may not be so prevalent in law enforcement etc – which could be driven by such segments being a little slower to adopt Linux or other areas of IT change. Of course, if you have any information that contradicts this, we would love to hear from you so your experience can be shared with others.
With respect to standard commercial or even non commercial laptops and desktops; adoption of Ubuntu Linux is high. A good stopping point to find out more about computers, Linux and Ubuntu is in the Ubuntu forums.  You may want to visit this site to get updates on and read comments on Ubuntu on laptops and desktops.
